I recently was fortunate enough to have been gifted with a rare copy of Goethes Faust. I had to make a my own paper cover for the book to protect the original one, as you can see. The book, which is timeless in its content, has long been a piece of literature I have aspired to read and I have been sincerely enjoying it as summer reading.
The copy I possess, which was printed in 1935 is unique in that it has both the original German text as well as the English translation.
This edition of Faust also has a well written forward which describes the ineptitude of translations at capturing the essence of original texts and how they fail to grasp the subtleties and nuances communicated in the language the book was written in, as well as their importance.
This preface serves as a reminder of what we miss out on in all books that been translated over time, and it begs us question, what else have we been missing?
